Starrgazy is the musical partnership of vocalist Lucie Hill and multi-instrumentalist Benjamin Wesley Morgan, based in Cornwall, UK.
Hill had never sung or played a note of music in public when she took flight from her hometown of Plymouth, UK, and journeyed to the furthest point possible, coming ashore on the volcanic black sands of New Zealand.
Living a transient lifestyle from the back of a van, Hill taught herself a few chords on a borrowed guitar and built up the confidence to sing at an open-mic night, and was quickly being booked to play shows in bars across New Zealand, performing nightly to the surfers and dreamers passing through on their way to another destination. Just as she was.
Returning to the UK after five years in New Zealand, and still living in a van, Hill gravitated to the coastal communities of Cornwall where a chance encounter with Morgan, a local musician, unearthed a shared love of the timeless dreampop of Mazzy Star and Cocteau Twins, and the brittle tonalities of post-punk and new-wave. However, their schedules conspired against them and the pair continued on their respective musical journeys for the next five years, knowing that their paths would cross again when the stars aligned.
Fast forward to 2020 and the duo reconnected during a period of lockdown. A tentative song idea, sent via email as an ice-breaker, snowballed into a prolific period of remote-writing, and Starrgazy was born.
Recorded at home and self-released, their debut single “Flying” was released in April 2021 and garnered national airplay on BBC Radio 6 Music as well as being named “Single of the Week” by BBC South West.
